APPOINTMENT OF PERSONAL REPRESENTATIVE - Court appoints a personal representative (executor or administrator). The representative manages the estate throughout the probate process.
INVENTORY AND APPRAISAL OF ASSETS - Identify and inventory all estate assets, including real estate, personal property, and financial accounts. Obtain professional appraisals to determine fair market value.
SETTLEMENT OF DEBTS - Pay valid debts, outstanding bills, taxes, and administrative costs from estate assets. Resolve creditor claims and disputes.
DISTRIBUTION OF ASSETS - After debts and expenses are paid, distribute remaining assets to heirs and beneficiaries according to the deceased’s will or, if no will exists, according to state laws.
CLOSING THE ESTATE - Prepare and submit a final accounting to the court. Officially close the estate once the court approves all transactions and distributions.
